“But why, Lord?”
by Aaron Markuson
Persistently that question comes
Sometimes like a torrent, impatient questions
rushing together to carry us
away as in a flood –
Sometimes like an avalanche seeking to overwhelm us –
And sometimes – oh, how often–
In a nagging whisper, breaking in on the quiet loneliness
of the night.
“But why, Lord?”…”But why, Lord?”…
We wait…We wait some more...
Endless, agonizing hours.
We hear no answer…no answer but the Lonely echo
of our own agonizing cry,
“Why…Why?”…“Why?”…
And then…and then…we sense a presence–
a calm and strong presence –
and we know our Lord is near.
We hear no explanation.
But our hearts are warmed, our spirits made calm.
And somehow we know He cares …He understands...
and He is with us to give His help.
It is enough…no words, but better than words,
an adequate Presence.
And we know that He will see us through the shadows
to a brighter day.
Yes, it is enough. And we have peace and hope again.
