The Confidence Factor
From the Marne Division’s weekly bulletin “Spiritual Thoughts for Sunday.”
Scripture: “. . . they strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith.” Acts 14:22
Commenting on Kansas City Chief’s quarterback Joe Montana’s performance in last season’s 28-20 AFC play-off win over the Oilers, columnist Jim Litke wrote:
Joe does not get down on himself. Joe does not scold his lineman for missed assignments or upbraid his receivers for dropping balls. He understands he will need all of them when the time comes. . . .
“He never loses his temper out there,” said wideout Willie Davis, who made up for losing an easy TD catch early in the game by finding a tough one in the late going. “He doesn’t say he’s not going to throw you the ball any more. He keeps his confidence in you” (Stars and Stripes, 18, Jan. 1994, p. 30)
Continually building up the self-assurance and skill of his teammates is Joe Montana’s trademark. The result — come-from-behind victories won decisively in the last quarter.
The Apostle Paul and his partner Barnabas used a similar approach when on their missionary travels in the first century. By “strengthening souls” and “encouraging others to continue in the faith,” these early leaders helped establish a strong church.
Soldiers of the Marne Division, follow the example of these leaders. Strengthen the souls of others — build up their confidence — by refusing to berate or maliciously cut down someone who has made a mistake. Seek to create a Godly climate in your work area, barracks, or quarters, acknowledging the Almighty as the source of life and strength. Strengthen others, and be strengthened in return. AMEN
Prayer
Help us, O God, never to conform to the low standards of any group or era for fear of being different. Grant that we may think, speak, and act boldly for eternal truth, justice, and mercy, and believe in and work for the best for the freedom, dignity, and growth of all. AMEN (Prayers for Men in Service, by G.A. Cleveland Shrigley, p. 28)
